The Showtime Lakers of the early 80s was the biggest thing in the NBA. Kareem, Worthy, Cooper, and the main character, Magic. He truly was and still is (does he even have AIDS anymore?). What is more is that one of the great basketball players ever is also a fascination of Iranians. How? Well Magic Johnson’s rookie season in the NBA was around the exact time that the Iranian Revolution began and Iranians began running out of Iran like chickens with their heads cut off.
Magic’s rookie season began in 1979 with the Los Angeles Lakers and since a vast majority of Iranians in the United States ended up in Los Angeles, the fascination of Iranians with Magic was meant to be. Magic Johnson represents a lot to Iranians. Magic and the Lakers basically represented to Iranians the antithesis Khomeini and his crew. Magic was passing basketballs without looking and doing hook shots from beyond the arc that dazzeled Iranians every night, while Khomeini of was passing laws without thinking and doing hangings on some hooks. As more and more Iranians in the states began to love Magic his popularity spread all of over the Iranian world, and who can resist that “Magic” smile?
When Magic announced he was HIV positive, Iranians felt like Khomeini had won. Some even believed that Khomeini was behind Magic getting AIDS. Magic never quit though and it has been 17 years (1991) since Magic found out that he was HIV positive. This, to Iranians, represents that no matter what Khomeini will do to them they can always defeat him, even though he is dead.
In the Iranian world some think that Magic Johnson is Iranian and call him Majid Johnson.
